Acknowledging it is home to 268 million of the world's 771 million illiterates, India on Wednesday cited plans to spend Rs 6,000 crores to make 85 per cent of Indians literate over the next five years.
The acknowledgement came at a presentation on the eve of a conference in New Delhi sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
The conference on Addressing the Literacy Challenge in South, Southwest and Central Asia: Building Partnerships and Promoting Innovative Approaches is scheduled for November 29-30.
The literacy rate reflected in census data in 2001 was 71 per cent among India's 15-to-35-year-olds. It placed the number of non-literates in 7+ age group at 304 million and in 15-35 age group at 100 million.

'Sweets and crackers don't make Deepavali special'
The Sivakumars, Chennai-->A recent study conducted by Professor K Nagaraj, a senior economist specialising in rural development and agrarian issues at the Madras Institute of Development Studies on farmers' suicides, has come out with startling revelations.
His study says that 1.5 lakh farmers committed suicide between 1997 and 2005, and two thirds of them are from four states -- Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh (including the present Chhattisgarh). In this interview with contributing editor Shobha Warrier, he talks in detail about the study and its findings.

How clean you are ? Indo China Comparison
According to a Unicef report, only 30% of the Indian population had access to proper sanitation though recent government figures say it's increased to nearly 47%.
Despite significant investments over the last 20 years, India still faces the most daunting sanitation challenge among countries in South Asia. It lags behind other South Asian countries like Bangladesh (4th ) and Pakistan (7th), said Depinder S Kapur of WaterAid India.
The booming population of towns coupled with poor drainage facilities make urban sanitation India's biggest challenge today. WaterAid says sanitation plays a vital role in reducing poverty. There is compelling evidence to show that sanitation brings the single greatest return on investment as compared to any development intervention (up to $9 for every $1 spent), it said.

Richest Indians List November 2007
The count for Indians in the list of the richest is taking more time now.
Everyone is busy with shares and the upgoing trend of business while a slight concern of appreciating ruppee gives a slight set back in terms of annual profits.

Steel tycoon Lakshmi Mittal, who lives in London, is No. 1 again, worth $51 billion, but Mukesh Ambani, whose Reliance Industries is India's most valuable company, is quickly closing the gap. His net worth jumped $30.5 billion to $49 billion, making him the year's biggest gainer. His estranged brother Anil is close on his heels, up $30.2 billion to $45 billion.
Kushal Pal Singh, worth $35 billion after the listing of his flagship DLF, is now the world's richest real estate developer.

Flying option to Bangalore Airport within the city
Bangalore International Airport Limited has decided to introduce an airline from the existing HAL airport to carry passengers.
It may sound good as one could cover the distance in half an hour (included take off and landing), but the problem is regarding the feasibility of this facility for the common man.The airline, which will be introduced to ferry passengers, will be premium class and could easily cost Rs 1,500 per head.
The choppers to be introduced by private airline companies will come up to Rs 1,200. Moreover, the chopper facility is available only to elite passengers.
